Char Dham Yatra 2026 — Routes, Costs & Senior-Friendly Tips

Trip Curator Team·June 10, 2026·12 min read

Everything you need to know about planning the sacred Char Dham circuit — helicopter options, fitness guidance, and family-friendly itineraries.

The Char Dham Yatra — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — is one of India's most revered pilgrimage circuits. For 2026, the portals are expected to open in late April/early May, with the season running through October.

The traditional route begins at Yamunotri (source of the Yamuna), moves to Gangotri (source of the Ganga), then to Kedarnath (one of the 12 Jyotirlingas), and finally Badrinath (major Vaishnava dham). This clockwise order is considered most auspicious.

For seniors and those with mobility concerns, helicopter services are available for Kedarnath (the most physically demanding leg). The trek to Kedarnath temple is 16 km one way, but helicopter services reduce this to a 10-minute flight. Book early — slots fill fast.

Fitness preparation is important. Even with helicopter options, you'll encounter altitude (Kedarnath is at 3,583m) and uneven terrain. We recommend starting light cardio 4-6 weeks before your yatra and consulting your physician if you have heart or respiratory conditions.

Budget planning: A well-managed 9N/10D Char Dham package ranges from ₹35,000 to ₹80,000 per person depending on accommodation level and helicopter inclusion. Beware of ultra-cheap packages that cut corners on safety and accommodation quality.

Our Char Dham packages include managed darshan timing (reduced waiting), comfortable mid-range to luxury stays, all meals, experienced pilgrimage guides, medical kit and oxygen support at altitude, and full flexibility for seniors.

Best months: May-June for comfortable weather (before heavy monsoon), or September-October for fewer crowds and clear skies. Avoid July-August when landslides frequently block roads.
